A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
