Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed I would book a place to stay upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and started wandering towards a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the night in a place operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at a crucial interview the next day, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more people who show such kindness.

I must have looked lost as a woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired if I was OK. I shared my situation and without hesitation she offered I could crash on a spare mattress at her university residence at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering some food: one stuffed baguettes she had taken home her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe for the evening.

Looking back, I can appreciate what a big chance she took as a young woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – yet deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish life has repaid her good deed abundantly. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
