Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create this new flavor within an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest development deepens the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Support
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally established several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to create other ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after many years of involvement, citing worries that its independence was compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
