Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
