Emerging Trump Doctrine Identifies Europe's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Lack of Racism?
During his initial presidency, commentators frequently advised that the former president's remarks should be taken seriously instead of word for word. However, subsequent events suggest that this approach could have got it backwards.
An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy alongside a series of comments from administration officials, presidential allies, and Trump himself have sparked what could be one of the most severe challenges for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has underpinned stability and freedom in Europe since World War II.
From Burden-Sharing to Civilizational Fear
Whereas The initial complaint centered on Europe's perceived refusal to fund its own security, his vision has now embraced a far more alarming outlook.
Tinged with racial prejudice and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he barely knows and mostly viewed from a distance.

This paranoid worldview, which has shaped contentious American border and law enforcement approaches, now appears to be informing Washington's understanding of Europe.
A Xenophobic Thesis
According to this logic, immigration from developing nations causes a cultural dilution of European societies, making them "weak" under "stupid" leadership and setting the stage for their demise. This is an unabashedly xenophobic ideology, with Trump and his circle explicitly endorsing far-right political parties across Europe.
Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is not new, its specific implications for European security are critically important.
For Trump and his Maga acolytes—including tech magnate Elon Musk, who has called for the dissolution of the EU—all politics is fundamentally a deal. But, while he once claimed was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a declining Europe is undeserving due to its embrace of diversity.
A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
During the conversation, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin wants a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the fissures between Washington and European capitals, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—all while denying any responsibility.
All of this is unfolding at possibly the most consequential moment for Europe in decades, amid a devastating war in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions elsewhere on the continent.
While Europe draw closer to Ukraine facing persistent threats of U.S. withdrawal, the peril is that Trump has constructed a rationale for ignoring his allies.
Reactions from Allies
This situation demands a firm reaction from European leadership. Although certain leaders, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been forceful in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a strategy of attempting to appease the White House.
Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.
The spokesperson stated, "The Prime Minister has a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on cooperating with each to deliver better outcomes for the people."
The stark reality is that Trump means his words and repeats them consistently. It is past time to abandon the pretense that things are different.
