Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
