Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
