New Year's Revelers Advised to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Throughout the UK
Weather experts are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, meaning extra layers vital, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Commuting is expected to be disrupted.
- The public have been urged to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.
The Mercury Set to Fall Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Medical Warnings Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
