A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
